The World Health Organization designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. According to the WHO, “nurses and midwives play a vital role in providing health services. They are often the first and only point of care in their communities. The world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.”
2020 was indeed the year of the much-needed nurse, though nobody imagined just how much we’d need them, or how vital they’d be to the survival of so many of their COVID-stricken patients.
With the surge of the global pandemic and the increasing need and impact of nursing in the workforce, the World Health Organization has extended the Year of the Nurse and Midwife through 2021.
American Nurse Association (ANA) Enterprise is happy to join the WHO and global colleagues in recognizing the increased visibility of nurses’ contributions, and has expanded National Nurses Week 2021 to the full month of May.
Nurses have also once again taken the crown in Gallup’s annual Honesty and Ethics poll, earning a record 89% high score for their honesty and ethics in 2020, four percentage points greater than in 2019.
In fact, nurses have topped Gallup’s Honesty and Ethics list in all but one year since they were added in 1999. The exception was 2001, when firefighters measured one point higher than nurses shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
